Staff Pick Premiere: "2002 (YEAR OF THE HORSE)" by Matias & Mathias |
As a way to resolve the conflict, a youthful and sprightly couple take their first step toward the negative during the most recent Staff Pick Premiere. The story of Matias and Mathias, "2002 (YEAR OF the Horse)" is a dysfunctional family affair The tale begins with a bitter father.
From the simple to the dramatic, there are a myriad of depictions of nuclear family split-ups. However, for Matias Mathias and Mathias their version of the incident is a bit surreal and they do it all within nine minutes of rambling conflict.
The film's timely , enduring absurdity sets it apart from other films that have conflict. The set-up - a bunch of children on the verge of finding their first love getting caught up in the grandstand of their father that is broken in a matter of seconds - is hilarious in its own way. The character's impulsive behavior and their response, and, most importantly, the completely hilarious final scene. Even in 2022 "2002" is an absolute standout as a cult Staff Pick comedy classic, due to Matias, Mathias, and their collaborators.
We caught up with Matias Mathias and Mathias to talk about inspiration and the process of filming, and also suggestions for filmmakers looking to become:

The idea behind this:
"It was most likely initiated by the father figure that was greatly influenced and influenced by an incredibly close friend and mentor of ours. We had been talking about what it was like to meet someone like his when a shy teenager might be a strange and a somewhat confusing. The thought of entering his home as a possible "son of the law" intrigued us, and caused us to be amused. Additionally, we felt an urge to make something that was simple and unassuming. It's more the story or anecdote you shared during your youth with loved ones rather than a neatly structured film. Twenty years between the film and our present day helped us to see it as a miniature-memory film in addition to removing our minds from worrying about the issues . "
On challenges:
"This film was shot in lockdown. The task of getting the kids to engage and feel at ease in the film that we made was a challenge. It was required that they stand at least six feet apart to share a kiss and fall in the love. But they quickly bonded with a mutual frustration at feeling like they had been missing the two most important years of their lives, being confined to living within their home, with their parents , and having the kind of experience the way we portrayed. Our intention was that our romantic kissing session would not be comfortable and drag in a bit too for too long. We hope that the situation were to our benefit. . "

On editing:
"Everything is happening in the home was shot on the same day. So although we started with a plan in place the shoot was messy. The shoot became a bit of a blur. We didn't really know whether we'd captured the essence of what it was we wanted in order into the film to make it work. We were aware that Henrik Mestad - who plays the father character - resulted in us ruining the sound quality of a lot of scenes as we'd smile at his sharp take on the role. Also, we knew there was no framework which would give us enough time to perfect every little aspect. Because we wanted the story to evoke the memories of this distant teenage experience, we attempted to let this influence the editing process as well. We let imperfections and mistakes to make an atmosphere that feels distinctive, even if it may be a little awkward . "
On scene choices:
"The girl who was pulling off the boy's t-shirt while she went to the bathroom so that the boy would not be dressed in a shirt while getting to meet her parents may be the consequence of a memory that has been lost somewhere. We liked the idea of making a collage in which teens gathered together could create one uniform. Like a little puzzle that would be very straightforward to parents to figure out. The story was written during the summertimeand wearing a shirt and hugging in the car wasn't as comfortable as it did initially however it was a little more intimate and awkward than when the couple was dressed. However, Henrik was not available for some time before it got colder in Oslo. We debated whether it would be somewhat ridiculous to dress in snow, and we all sort decided that it would be but it might be a good thing. So, we decided to stick for the idea . "

A note of guidance for aspiring film makers:
"To be clear that we are also viewed as filmmakers who would like to become. But one thing we often discuss is the importance of having fun and shooting and making stuff frequently as we can. Making sure that we write with discipline and focusing out thoughts that distract you is vital obviously, however we try to adhere to the same guidelines when we write. How can we write this so that it will be enjoyable and exciting when we're actually shooting it? We then try to shape it so that it will make it more realistic to produce. This can be difficult to do, and is quite basic but useful. . "
On upcoming projects:
"We're creating a feature-length comedy about anxiety and addiction. It's an hour long and as hard as it can be but we're hoping it will be a lot fun and more entertaining than what you're expecting. We're extremely excited and are hoping to get out to make the film soon. . "
