Photographs in black and white - The CreativeMindClass Blog

We asked Titika about the key to the mysterious photos in black and white.

"My Name is Titika Rotkjaer. I'm an artist from Copenhagen, Denmark. Following my studies in communication from Roskilde University, Denmark, I transferred to Norway to further my studies in visual art initially at Oslo National Academy of the Arts and later, in Bergen which is where I completed my studies in visual art in the Bergen Academy of Art and Design which included an MA in textile Art. There is no formal training in photography. My knowledge about photography and editing comes from continuous education on my own.

Do you want to know about my style? Could I talk about expression rather than style? I never think about style... Telling stories from a poetic and personal perspective, in each image I focus on mood, expression, the mood. Developing how my images appear is a procedure. It is my goal to always refine and clear the meaning. Sometimes I re-edit old images when I learn something new that allows me to move closer to what I wanted to create.

My secret ingredient to create my mysterious photographs ...? In most of my images that I have created over the past four years - I've been exploring the complexity and sense of self with a special interest in connecting both the outer and inner worlds. Some of my photographs - but not all - are constructed digitally of several pictures (all are, naturally taken by me).

My process typically starts with an intrigue or interest in exploring a topic or a complex of emotions. I shoot, write notes, and then read for additional knowledge. Then I continue to shoot. Working with the images often leads me to construct a new one out of several others. I work experimentally, subjectively, and intuitively with the theme to let my photographs take shape. It's difficult to have an accurate vision of the final product in my mind's eye and after that, I shoot the components to construct it."
