News: US judge warns Google that major changes will be Instigated to Stop Illegal Play Store Monopoly

Aug 24, 2024

U.S. District Judge James Donato has warned Google that significant changes could be made to its Android application store following a jury determined the Play Store is operating as an illegal monopoly.

The Associated Press reports that Judge Donato said he could need Google to allow alternative stores for apps on Android devices. It is a step that aims to reduce Google's power in app distribution and the billing through its platform. This monopoly of "nearly complete control" generates billions annually for Google and this court's ruling could alter this process, as Google estimating potential costs of up to 600 million dollars.

Google has raised concerns regarding the fact that opening up to open the Play Store to third-party app stores can expose users to security risk, leading to what Google describes as "security chaos." Despite these concerns the judge Donato emphasized that there is a need for an extensive revision, noting, "We are going to remove the barriers; that is going to happen."

This is part of an antitrust campaign that is broader than Google and another important matter involving the company's Google search engine due to be launched in September. The judge hopes to make an order describing the required changes to Google's Play Store soon, possibly in the days before Labor Day.

The article in The Verge on the same issue highlights Epic Games benefiting from these outcomes as well. There is also a the article's subtitle that reads "Judge James Donato will issue his final order on what Google gives -- and Epic is awarded within a matter of weeks."
