Motion and space in illustration The CreativeMindClass Blog

Aug 6, 2022

From the time I was a kid I've loved to draw, paint, and play with my hands. It was and always has been my most natural method to express myself. But growing up in Taiwan, pursuing an artistic profession was looked down upon and often told by adults to study deeper into practical topics, or else I'll end in the streets starving to death.

It is a blessing that my mom was always encouraging me to pursue anything that I desired and has done everything in her power to help to achieve my dreams. Following my return to the United States and graduating high school, I realized that I wanted to pursue art as profession.

I was accepted into ArtCenter College of design, studied Illustration intended to go into the feature animation field. But along the way, I came across motion graphics and was enthralled by their versatility as well as all the amazing work that is produced by the people I admire.

How would you describe your style?

I am still on the journey to finding a style that I can confidently claim as my unique. I am prone to want to try different things from time to time... One month, I'll be drawn to doing very colorful things, soon I'll try my hand at more naturalistic colors; I'll get really into a driving style for a while but then one day I'll be tired of it and want to try something that's more inspired by forms.

Sometimes, I'll attempt to merge opposite things that are intriguing to me, like I'm on an endless quest to discover and discover. However, after experimenting a bit here and there I'm starting to realize there are some shapes, colors, compositions that I am drawn to. Perhaps it's the beginning of a style?

It's one of the reasons why I am so happy being at Oddfellows, sometimes I still find myself wondering if I'm lucky to be part of a team of insanely talented individuals. At work we often have the ability to change our style from project to project, nearly every task is completed in different styles, and I'm constantly discovering new information from my coworkers every day.

What are the most important things to consider when creating your illustration?

I like to make sketches of topics that interest me or am interested in. I then attempt to give my own spin to the subject.

However, my main goal is having amusement. It is my opinion that having fun is the most important factor in creating anything that viewers are able to see if a creator had enjoyment doing some thing... it adds sparkle.

As I was battling the epidemic, and seeing my colleagues and our studio working hard to help the community and the community, I felt compelled to launch a Patreon dubbed Joy&Frens with a half of my net earnings go to the charities of my patrons choice. There, I post Tips & Tricks, process videos, invite friends for collaborations and share their wisdom.

My work can also be seen my work on Instagram as well as on my web site.
