Motion and space in illustration - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Mar 16, 2022

From the time I was a kid I've loved to draw or paint and to play using my hands. It's been the simplest way to express my feelings. As a kid in Taiwan and Taiwan the arts as a career was viewed as an undesirable thing to do as a way to make money. I was constantly directed by parents to focus on the more practical aspects of art or I'd end up on the streets and starving to death.

Fortunately, my Mom always supported my pursuit of whatever I wanted and has gone above and beyond her ability to assist me to achieve my objectives. When I returned in America, United States and graduating high school, I decided that I would like to go after the field of art for a profession.

I was accepted to ArtCenter College of design, where I studied Illustration in the hopes of advancing into the world of feature animation. Through the course of my studies I was introduced to motion graphics, and fell in the love of its flexibility  in addition to the outstanding work accomplished by the people whom I admiration.

What would you say about your personal style?

It's still a long journey to finding a fashion that I'm able to identify as being my personal. It's my nature to be drawn to trying various new styles every once in a while... Every month I'll want to do something very vibrant, and soon I'll want to try my hand at the more natural-looking colours. I'll be really into a shape car style for a couple of months, and then I'll get bored of it and want to try something that's more inspired by the shapes.

In other instances I'll mix two things that seem fascinating for me. It's as like I'm in the adventure of learning and information. After fumbling a bit in the past, I'm beginning to notice that there are certain styles, colors or patterns I'm drawn to. Could this be the beginning of a new style?

This is one of the main reasons I'm extremely happy working here at Oddfellows as well as times when I'm amazed that I'm blessed to be working with such an amazing group of individuals. The work we do requires us to be able to adapt to different ways of working for each project. nearly every task must be completed in different styles and I'm always discovering new information from my coworkers every day.

What are the most important things to consider when making your drawings?

I enjoy drawing pictures of subjects I am intrigued or curious in, then try to add my own twist to it.

However, the most important thing is to have enjoyable. Fun is the most important factor in creating anything which viewers can observe that the creator was enjoying doing something... that makes it more attractive.
