"Let's begin by defining the adjectives to best describe my work: bold, expressive and layered."

"My name is Claudia Melchor, I am formalized in architecture, however, I've had a passion for art and 2D mediums since I can recall."

What was the process of transferring from architecture to mixed-media illustrations?

"When the time came to decide on a career I was told, as many others, not to pursue a career in arts. And I listened. Fast forward a Bachelor and Master degree in Architecture, and I was completely dissatisfied with my work behind the computer. Then , during my gap year after university, I started making illustrations, drawings and other products that featured my designs on them, and I had never felt better!

All of it started right when I was offered a position at an office for architecture that I currently manage with my illustration business and ongoing studies in the field of art history. I hope to get rid of the corporate architecture job soon enough and concentrate fully on the art I love and using mixed media techniques.

I'm hoping my tale will aid individuals who aren't sure which subject to pursue to understand that the art degree does not matter, you could be an artist from every background. And the most important part is that this can give your work a distinctive look. Of course, attending an art school must be a fantastic learning experience too!"

What would you say about the style of your illustrations?

"I believe that describing your personal style is a difficult task. I asked my buddies about this and their descriptions of it couldn't be more accurate. The way they described my work is as if everything I paint appears in movement like the wind is blowing across the painting , and then dropping colors on everything it touches. I could not have a better way to describe the effect honestly.

I like layering textures and exploring a variety of colors. I'm a maximalist in that sense. If I am able to restrict a color palette, the wider the color range gets.

In a glance at some of my topic options, some of my most favorite subjects to paint are landscapes with mountains and oceans since it is a reminder of my childhood home in Tenerife which is a small, charming island situated in the Atlantic ocean.

However, I also create human-like characters with exaggerated features and colorful skin. Of course, I will always incorporate an architectural component - those 6 years of architecture studies have to show up somewhere."

What is the key to making your mixed-media illustrations?

"I consider that the secret in my art is not to plan too much beforehand. In reality, this method can work but it can also fail however, not worrying over the end result will allow you to explore your art.

I love watching the process of coloring and painting , and of changing my mind in my final pieces. It shows my relationship to the paper, to my context, and to my painting. You are able to trace my decisions in the finished product.

I like being able to get my hands dirty and mix up my personal paints. The only thing you require to create my work is lots of different materials (doesn't require anything extravagant, however I like to mix mediums) and a loose hand and a willingness to layer paint and start at the beginning."
