Abstract geometric and graphic illustrations: imaginary drawings deeply rooted in graffiti created by Marc David Spengler

An integral part of the creation process of geometric illustrations is the anticipation of unforeseen results. Marc emphasises that every shape and colour selection can be seen as an impulse reaction to the shape and colour that he has previously sketched. Optic illusions, false shadows the transformation from flatness to dimensions, all seemingly basic details - when presented in the Ampersand Gallery in Portland last year, they fascinated the audience.

Geometric Illustrations Lesson

  • No pencil drawing beforehand.
  • Begin working on the outside by sketching a silhouette of the background.
  • Imagine what might be inside the inside.
  • Avoid oversaturating it by adding too many information.
  • Use the parameter you have been given.
  • Create an unreal shadow by making an optical illusion.
  • Aim for creating harmony.
  • Always react to what you have previous drawing.
  • Draw small sketches.

"My name is Marc David Spengler, I'm 25 years old and I'm living in a suburb of Stuttgart, Germany. Since the age of a youngster, I've enjoyed drawing a lot. I remember when I was in the fifth grade, I made a note that my career aspiration was to become a vehicle artist. In the next few years in my 12th grade year, I discovered the world of graffiti, which has been a huge motivational source for the rest of my life.

The reason why artists employ geometric forms?

There's no way to find an artist doing real graffiti However, I'm watching geometric patterns every day on magazines, social media and books. When I finished school in 2014, and began studying in communication designs at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart which is where I'm learning today as a student in the class of Patrick Thomas.

Besides my studies and research, I'm also working on exhibits as well as brand collaborations and my sketchbooks. When it comes to my illustration style, I'm mostly working on abstract geometric patterns as well as bright color combinations which attempt to blend into the frame I've created for myself. The goal of every illustration which I'm working on is to create harmony.

How to do geometric art?

To make geometric art, I don't have an initial pencil sketch which is why a large portion my drawings are imagined. I love to begin my work in the outer space by sketching a silhouette of the background and then I imagine what's in the interior. This is why I am constantly responding to the shapes I've drawn previously and this makes the process interesting to me because I don't even know what the final result will look when it's finished.

I favor making simple geometric illustrations because I have a better overview of the design and I am less likely to overwhelm it by adding excessive specifics. When I'm drawing, I love to experiment with the provided parameters, like adding an unreal shadow or making an optical illusion. This is since everything is feasible in the two-dimensional world."
