Jul 6, 2022

We've updated community notification settings to improve the user experience (and fewer email messages). Here's what's new.

What's the best way to notify members about what's happening in your community?

It is important to inform your users know about interesting discussions and encourage them to participate in more discussions However, you need to give your members the ability to control their experience and prevent notification overload. And we heard from our founders about how crucial that you strike the right equilibrium.

The latest version of the community function that you and your users get more control over notification notifications. It means more active discussions, no more flooded inboxes, and a community platform that can bring you and your audience closer to each other.

Set your own notifications settings as a creator member

Creators and community members are now able to choose the notifications they'd like to get for the same topic: Posts that are new, new replies to posts you've made, and/or new replies to your posts.

Once you have logged into an online community as a member, go to Settings, then click on "Edit" in the Notifications. (Creators will find this option in the Notifications tab in your account Settings.)

There are a variety of communities you are following. Just check or uncheck the boxes that control the kinds of notifications you would prefer to receive on the specific topic.

As an example, you could wish to receive updates for posts, comments, and replies in a time-sensitive topic like Live Events or Announcements. In other areas it is possible to receive only updates whenever someone publishes the post, or turn off announcements for that subject completely.

You may also toggle the notifications off and on through clicking "Mute ALL" as well as "Unmute all".

Additionally, you are able to modify your notification preferences per topic easily by accessing your "All topics"page or on an specific topic page. Select the bell icon after which you can set your preferences for notifications.

Set default notifications for a topic

Creators may also choose to establish standard notification settings for each topic in your community, giving you more control over the member experience.

Instead of sending notification emails to your members for every blog post it is possible to choose the topics your members get notified about and which types of notifications they receive.

Here's how:

From the Community tab on your dashboard, choose "All subjects". Then, click the "..." next topic you'd like to modify and click "Edit the topic". Then, select your settings for notifications under "Default notifications".

Members can change these notifications settings at any point to their account. If members haven't changed their settings, then they'll default to the settings that were set by the author of each topic.
