Celebrating History, Embracing Progress: International Women's Day 2024
Every year on March 8th, the world unites to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD). It's a time when we celebrate the remarkable achievements made by women, reflect on their challenges, and recommit ourselves to ensuring that equality truly reigns. At , we know it wasn't a day that grew in a flash. It's the culmination of struggle, resilience, and unwavering determination. We celebrate this day by encouraging you to as well take an enlightening journey through the history and culture of IWD, a testament to the ongoing power of collective action.
Beginning with Seeds of Change to a Global Movement
The seeds for IWD were planted during the first half of 20th century. It was a period where the struggle for women's rights gained momentum. On the 8th of March of 1857, a group of women were on strike to protest the low working conditions and a lack of rights for women in their trade of clothing. This protest called for the reduction of working hours as well as fair and reasonable living wage. Years later in 1908 on March 8 an organized march by female workers in the needle trades took place to protest child labor, conditions in sweatshops, and to demand that women be able to vote. A year later, in 1910, March 8th became annually recognized to be International Women's Day.
A Catalyst for Change
Throughout the 20th century, IWD became a significant agent of change. It was a forum where women could raise their voices on issues like the right to vote, fair work conditions, pay and the right to access education. In 1975, IWD was recognized by the United Nations officially recognized IWD which affirmed the global importance of IWD.
A Day of Celebration and Action
In the present, IWD is celebrated in numerous ways, from breathtaking parades to intimate gatherings. It's a time to recognize outstanding women from every field, from scientists and artists to activists and entrepreneurs. But, IWD isn't only an opportunity to celebrate, but an invitation to action. It is a reminder that the battle to achieve gender equality is far from over. It is imperative to continue to fight for equal opportunities, challenge negative stereotypes and help empower women and girls everywhere. The main theme of International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women: Accelerating Progress" using the widely popular hashtag #InvestInWomen.
As per the UN, these five areas are key to pushing ahead this hashtag until it becomes outdated:
- investing in women one of the human rights issues:Time is running out. Equal gender representation is the biggest human rights challenge, benefiting all.
- Ending poverty: Because of the COVID outbreak and the conflict in the region over the last 75 million people have been forced into extreme in poverty as of in the year 2000. Immediate action is crucial for preventing more than 342 million women and children who are living in poverty by 2030.
- Implementing gender-responsive financing: Conflicts and rising costs could cause 75% of countries to reduce public expenditure in 2025. This could negatively affect women and their essential services.
- Shifting to a eco-friendly and caring society:The present economic system significantly impacts women. Advocates propose a shift to an eco-friendly economy and society in order to increase women's voices.
